Position title:
Nursery Assistant Apprentice

Job description:
Working directly for the School Business Manager :

  1. Support for Children
  • Jointly with the nursery teacher and/or the early years practitioner, work with the class, a group or individual children in learning activities across all areas of the EYFS curriculum
  • To encourage children to develop and extend their use of language, vocabulary and speech
  • To support in activities, adult or child initiated,  and encourage children to join in activities
  • To take a part in observing and recording children’s learning and share this with all other nursery staff
  • To accompany children on educational visits or local walks outside of the school
  • To ensure children are safe and secure, included and valued
  • To encourage all children to develop independence and self-confidence and good relationships with others
  • To attend to children’s personal hygiene and supervise their use of toilet facilities
  • To help children become responsible for their own personal hygiene
  • To encourage and help children to be responsible for their environment
  1. Support for the teacher
  • To work as a team member to prepare for each session.  
  • To ensure that resources, including books and materials, are well maintained
  • To prepare children’s work for display
  • To prepare the classroom and outside area for sessions, ensuring that resources and equipment are available, and to clear away at the end of each session, as appropriate and as directed by the nursery teacher
  • If necessary, accompany the teacher on home visits as appropriate at the start of each term. 
  1. Other Duties
  • To be aware of Health and Safety matters and refer to the school Health and Safety policy
  • To maintain confidentiality at all times
  • To attend appropriate in-service training and visit other schools and settings 
  • To make contributions to any record keeping in connection with welfare concerns and SEN
  • To be aware of and follow all school policies with particular regard for Equal opportunities, Inclusion and safeguarding
  • To become involved, where possible, in the life of the whole school
  • To undertake any other duties requested by and negotiated with the Headteacher

Skills & Abilities required: 

  1. Interested in a career working with babies and young children
  2. Ability to demonstrate patience
  3. Ability to reflect on learning and actively seek learning opportunities
  4. To work constructively as part of a team, understanding roles and responsibilities and their own position within these.
  5. Able to display a commitment to the protection and safeguarding of children
  6. Good communication skills, with clear spoken English
  7. Able to work flexibly within a team, asking for and giving support as needed
  8. Able to understand the importance of being punctual and the impact absence has on the effectiveness of the team


  • Anyone aged 16 and over may apply for this apprenticeship
  • GCSE passes in maths and English are desirable but not essential requirements
  • Applicants must reasonably be able to travel to work within a maximum of 1 hour

  • Minimum duration: 12-15 Months
  • A minimum of 1 day per week will be allocated for training purposes
